For 10 years the industrial fish reserves in Lake Sevan have disappeared. In this time period the Ministry of Nature Protection of RA submitted various explanations why the whitefish is not a protected species, and consequently is not protected by the Ministry.
Or that the crucian carp oust the whitefish from the ecological chain. Meanwhile the main reasons such as overfishing and poaching were causally mentioned in passing not suggesting any drastic measures. Nobody bears responsibility that Sevan and consequently the whole Armenia has been deprived of the fish.
At present already nobody disputes the fact that extinction of the fish industrial reserves is a disaster. Attempts have been made to recover the fish reserves in Sevan, but these attempts are too timid. Immediately a number of questions arises, for example, how reasonable it is to waste budget money on “Sevan” National Park whose task is to protect, how the State Environmental Inspection works, if the whitefish forbidden for hunting is sold on each corner, why money is wasted on reproduction of endemic species of the trout, if no control is exercised over the preservation of the young fish etc.
The Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology has a number of suggestions, but so far these suggestions have been considered by the press only.
Below are published the materials in the mass media about the conference given by Bardoukh Gabrielyan, Direction of the Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology of the National Academy of Sciences of RA on 2 February.
VLADIMIR MOVSISYAN SURPRISED INSTITUTE OF HYRDOECOLOGY AND ICHTHYOLOGY OF RA: FOR ONE YEAR GENERAL RESERVES OF FISH IN SEVAN REDUCED BY 120 TON

All the statements that during 2010 the whitefish reserves in Sevan increased by 20% don’t comply with the reality and have no scientific substantiations. This statement was made by Bardoukh Gabrielyan, Director of Hydroecology and Ichthyology of the National Academy of Sciences when he commented the statement made by Vladimir Movsisyan, Chairman of the Committee on Lake Sevan Issues.

In 2009 the general reserves of the fish in Sevan made up 240-250 tons which is less by 100 tons than the indicator for 2008 (about 360 tons).
The decrease in reserves occurred at the expense of reduction in the crucian carp population. What about the whitefish, its reserves practically didn’t change for one year and made up 170-180 tons. When speaking about the trout, B. Gabrielyan said that its amount in the lake doesn’t exceed even 0.1%.
