The waste burial ground belongs to “Manes” LLC (EcoLur’s note: a part of Vallex Group company). Company Director Aghvan Hovhannisyan says all zones in Armenia where wastes are located are risk zones, as no measures have been taken in this direction for nearly 20 years.

“Naturally it’s worth finding out what is the situation in the waste burial ground,” Hovhannisyan said.

When he was asked why the company itself doesn’t deal with this issue, Hovhannisyan said they lack funds. “Nevertheless, we think waste accumulator doesn’t pose great danger to environment,” he thinks.

In contrast, “For Sustainable Human Development” Association Chairman Karine Danielyan thinks this problem must be given any solution and the waste burial ground content must be eliminated.

“Armenia has no appropriate technologies for safe liquidation of such wastes. We should either obtain these technologies, or export wastes to a country with such technologies,” she said.
