The Ministry of Nature Protection of RA publicized some information about the engineering data of the new nuclear power unit in Armenia in connection with environmental impact of this nuclear power unit.
Armenia will need approximately territory of 74 ha for the nuclear power unit which is completely included in the territory of current nuclear power plant. This territory was earlier designed for the 3rd and 4th power units.
The territory of the nuclear power unit is 930 m above sea level and is located 32 km west from Yerevan. The border with Turkey is to the south from this territory and runs parallel with the Aras River; the distance of the nuclear power plant from the Turkish border is nearly 16 km.
According to the data for 2006, a population of nearly 228,000 people lives within the radius of 16 km, out of which 51% live in rural areas. About 2 million people live within the radius of 50 km, out of which 57% live in Yerevan City.
