On November 21, 2019, the Government of the Republic of Armenia adopted Resolution 1667-N on the Procedure for Restoration, Conservation, Reproduction of Fish and Crawfish Resources in Lake Sevan, which determines their resources, procedures for quantity, forms, and organization of fish and crawfish production.
According to the resolution, each year the Authorized Body, the Ministry of the Environment, is obliged to notify the public through the mass media and an announcement on its official website on the launch of the fish and crawfish hunting contracts in Lake Sevan.
However, the decision will only work if lake has the industrial reserves available in the lake, Evelina Ghukasyan, Director of Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology at Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA, told EcoLur.
In recent years, there has been a tendency for growth of whitefish reserves. The whitefish industrial reserve in the lake was about 730 tonnes, but Ichthyologist, Doctor of Biological Sciences Bardukh Gabrielyan finds that whitefish reserves in the lake are advisable to operate when the industrial reserve exceeds 1,000 tonnes allowing the lake to have a sustainable reserve of the whitefish.
Each year Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia announces a tender for the state needs for the establishment of permissible quantities of crawfish and fish reserves in Lake Sevan. This year the competition was announced late on August 20, and the results are not ready yet. Whitefish reserves are still in the evaluation phase, they will be announced on December 5-7,” Evelina Ghukasyan said.
