At the press conference on December 25, 2019, RA Minister of Environment Erik Grigoryan commented on the draft Law on Making Amendments to RA Law on Freedom of Information, which defines “environmental information” term and the grounds for refusal to provide environmental information.
"When we were watching the news feeds, what a great response ... I was just amazed because the change was about just one point. If we are required to provide information on red-listed animal habitats, we may also decline environmental information ... anyone may want specific GPS coordinates of the Caucasian leopard habitat. We have tried to ensure under the law and not provide this information,” Erik Grigoryan said.
The draft law caused a lot of discussion and misunderstanding at the end of 2019. Still on December 22, 2019, the Freedom of Information Center of Armenia and a number of other NGOs issued a joint statement calling on the Ministry of Environment to refrain from this initiative. In December 2019, 13 specialized NGOs demanded that the bill be withdrawn.
