What will Armenian ecosystems face because of climate changes? George Fayvush, UNDP/GEF “Preparation of Third National Communication Under UNFCCL”, Senior Expert in Project Vulnerability and Adaptability, Dr. in Biological Sciences, answered to this question at the round table entitled 'Vulnerability of Ecosystems Conditioned with Climate Change.'
Considering the situation of ecosystems in the scenario of temperature increase and precipitation reduction George Fayvush noted that shift in the conditions will occur: 'The conditions of the place, where now alpine meadows and carpets are located, will be adjusted to the conditions of sub-alpine meadows. Steppes will be formed in the sub-alpine zones. In the places where we have meadow-steppes, we will have only steppes. The places where we have steppes, we will have again have steppes with drier conditions. That is, we will have increase in some areas, while other areas will be reduced...Such shift in current conditions will lead to the degradation of contemporary ecosystems,' said George Fayvush in his speech and mentioned already now we shall seek ways to conserve certain types.
He also proposed to regulate human impact on ecosystems in scientifically ssubstantiated manner. 'Most ecosystems currently need human impact, which is particularly true for grass ecosystems. Even now we can see how in many places Alpine carpets disappear turning into Alpine meadows. First of all, it's the result of less grazing, when non-edible, but beautifully flowering plants replace plants. What about forest ecosystems, if we don't touch forests, the current ecosystem will change and most probably the forest will turn into something, which can't even called a wild forest. That is, certain impact is currently needed.'
