Because of lack of water in Azat reservoir the forestation works planned in “Erebuni” forestry enterprise in Yerevan Forestry Enterprise, haven’t been carried out partially: out of 51 ha area around 30 ha area hasn’t undergone reforestation. The reforestation of these areas is planned for 2015 and 2016. A question arises: when reforestation shall take place, when the destiny of Azat reservori is under questions because of Qaghtsrashen gravity irrigation project funded by the World Bank. The project plans to lay a pipeline from the middle reach of the Azat river to make irrigation available in the communities in Ararat Region.
The positive environmental expertise opinion issued to the project says, 'After implementation of the project the Azat reservoir will be filled at the expense of residual yields of the irrigaton system and yields of non-irrigation system (according to hydrological observations, 64 million cum water will be collected in the reservoir on annual basis, even if 75% fullness is ensured).'
It should be mentioned that the fullness of Azat reservoir for 2014 accounted for 46.2 million cum.
