Yuri Javadyan: If We Don't Construct Reservoirs Quickly, We Will Experience 80% of Water Deficit

Armenia has 7,300,000,000 cum of flowing water, out of which annually only 2,300,000,000 cum is used, while remaining 5 billion flows out of Armenia. Because of climate change Armenia will face deficit of water: Yuri Javadyan, Chairman of Scientific-Expert Committee of Lake Sevan Preservation expressed his concerns, “We will expect around 4.5 degree increase by 2050, which will endanger us with water reduction by annually 12 million cum.”

“Taking into consideration that we have 340,000 individual farming economies, we shall strictly treat reservoir construction issues. We have 82 operating reservoirs, out of which 6 are for energy purposes, 76 are designed for irrigation. The largest reservoir is Akhuryan with 525 million cum capacity, which is located on the transboundary river. All transboundary rivers are used at 50/50 ratio. Though both countries don’t have any ties between, water distribution is done quite clearly, we never had any complaints on water distribution,” Yuri Javadyan.

Under him, we will face a serious problem with water distribution. “The water resource of Araks-Akhuryan is 2.5 billion, and we have equal right to it, nevertheless, we use only 55% out of 50%, i.e. we don’t use 45% of the water resource, though we are entitled to. But we have 50,00 ha of irrigable area under this resource in Armavir, Talin and Shirak. Currently the Turk Government, without asking us is constructing a reservoir with1,800,000,000 cum capacity, another reservoir with 220 million cum capacity will start its operation next year. In parallel, around 40,000 ha of irrigable area is developed based on this reservoir. Another reservoir with 160 million cum capacity is on the tributary to the Aras River and will be operated in 2-3 years. If we don’t manage to construct reservoirs quickly, we will experience 75-80% deficit for the irrigation of these 50,000 ha irrigable areas,” Yuri Javadyan said.

“In this viewpoint to be able to overcome Turkey we shall make Kaps reservoir from 25 million cum to 60 million, Yeghvar reservoir – 90 million cum, Vedi – 29 million cum, Qasagh – 12 million cum, Selav Mastaran – one with 7 million cum capacity and another with 13 million cum capacity will be operated soon,” Yuri Javadyan said.
