Activation of global warming process will result in the adversary impact of the climate component on biodiversity, which is expressed in the reduction of population and species, change in habitats, burst out in diseases, as Gagik Manucharyan, Biodiversity Policy Department Head, Staff of Nature Protection Ministry, said at the round table entitled “Vulnerability of Ecosystems Conditioned with Climate Change” held at EcoLur Press Club on 12 May.
According to him, the 10th conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted a biodiversity conservation and sustainable development plant, which says that at least 17% of land areas and 10% of internal water shall be preserved through effectively managed and closely connected system of specially protected areas of nature by 2020. “This figure in Armenia fluctuates around 13%. If we subtract the surface of Lake Sevan, it will turn into 7%. It already becomes clear how much we should work to reach this 17%,” the speaker said.
He mentioned that on 25 September 2014 the Armenian Government approved with its resolution N 1059 state action plan on the strategy, preservation and use of specially protected areas for 2014-2020. The strategy on biodiversity preservation in Armenia and the action plan for 2016-2020 are still in development.
Gagik Manucharyan proposed to set up a governmental committee for projects, where any project to be implemented by the Ministry shall be approved.
