Draft Law on Provision of Environmental Information Contains Non-substantiated Risks of Rejection: Ombudsman

According to the Ombudsman's view, the draft law on Freedom of Information developed by Environment Ministry contains non-substantiated risks of rejection. According to the Ombudsman's position, the draft law does not reflect the actual content of the provisions of the Aarhus Convention on Access to Environmental Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice, and may, in practice, lead to a non-substantiated rejection to provide environmental information.

The Ombudsman attaches importance to the guarantee of freedom of information in this field and to the civilian supervision of the protection of the environment. The Human Rights Defender's Office is studying the draft law from the point of view of compliance with international standards, the results of which will be submitted to the National Assembly.
