The fifth session of the meeting of the parties to the Aaurhus Convention took place in Maastricht, Netherlands 29 June-4 July 2014, where Armenia’s failure to comply with the Aarhus Convention and the consequences thereof were raised. In the meeting of the parties the Committee reached a decision that depriving the NGOs of their right to call upon to course in regard with the lawfulness ofTeghut mine development, the Armenian Government has violated the right of public organizations to protection of public rights as laid down in the Aarhus Convention.
This is the third decision on Armenia's failure of its international commitments, which means that Armenia together with Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan is among the countries having periodically failed to ensure the provisions of the AarhusConvention. This decision has legally prescribed the right of interested public to call upon to court to stop both Teghut and other illegal environmental projects.
