Forests in Armenia Preserved Only On Paper
Samvel Avagyan, News.am
How much forest is remained in Armenia? It may sound surprising, but there is no reply to this question. Under “ArmForest” SNCO Deputy Head Ruben Petrosyan, the statistics on forest was last published in 1993 – at that relevant moment forest territories made up 334,000 ha. No statistic data have been published from that time on.
Recently the GIZ carried out remote sensing which helped to estimate forest areas - from 332,000 ha to 333,000 ha.
The budget doesn’t finance forest planting, which are conducted at the expense of “ArmForest” own funds. In 2011 only 28 ha of territory was planted with trees as compared with 400 ha in 2009.
