On December 10, the employees of Alaverdi Copper Smelting Plant held a protest in Alaverdi demanding to pay their salaries.  Alaverdi Copper Smelting Plant operated by Vallex Group ACP Company, which has been out of operation for more than a year, has been transferred to VTB Bank for bail. For the past three months, 165 plant workers have not received their salaries for September, October and November. The company had offered to meet with five employees selected from the protest group, but the offer was rejected.

Artush Abelyan, a member of Alaverdi Aldermen’s Council, told EcoLur about this. According to Artush Abelyan, the company promised to pay the salary by the end of the year: “We may get a salary. They said they will pay it by the end of December. The employee contracts with the company were extended until January 10. It is unknown whether it will be postponed or will be canceled after January 10,” he said.

It should be noted that the Armenian government is running negotiations with Chinese company CITIC Construction on the construction of a new copper smelter in Alaverdi with high environmental standards.
