Arjut Gold Mining Project Poses Risks to Local Drinking Springs

The public hearings of Arjut gold mining project submitted by 'Baktech Eco' LLC will be held at 12:00 on 23 July in Yerevan (3rd floor, 46 Charents).

Under the mining project, Arjut gold mine is located in Lori Region in a distance of 12 km from Vanadzor Town, Arjut Village. The open pitch mining area makes up 15.7 ha, while dump area makes up 13.6 ha. The contractual price for the area was assessed only 15,000 AMD for one ha, when in this area 2231300 tons of sulphide area has 3080.9 kg of gold, 17.64 tons of silver and 6821 tons of copper, while 192400 tons of oxidized ore has 386.50 kg of gold and 2.75 tons of silver.

The mine will be developed in opencast manner in two stages. Oxidized ore will be developed in the first stage, while sulphide ore will be developed in the second stage. The first stage will last for two years, while the second stage will last for 24 years. . The ore will be transported to Armanis ore dressing plant, which is located in a distance of  30 km.

The project says, 'There are many mountainous springs in the studied area of the mine, the water of which is used for drinking. The area also has different miner water springs.' It should be mentioned that the project doesn't assess the risks for springs, moreover, when explosions will be conducted when developing the mine, which can harm water springs, as well as poison water with toxic substances.
