Breakdown at Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine (Photos)
An emergency state has been established in the surroundings of Kapan caused by the breakdown at the tailing dump of Zangezour copper and molybdenum combine. Our sources in Kapan inform that the tails have poured out into the Voghji River flowing through Kapan town. The photos sent to us clearly show that the river obtained the shade characteristic of tails. You can find details in the report by Mary Soghomonyan, own correspondent of the Aravot newspaper, the full version is in Armenian. “The color of the river in the downtown turned into muddy-milky, the river smelled disgustingly. Locals say in previous times the breakdowns at the combine resulted in the same scene. However, this is the first time they have seen such a wide-scale breakdown. Head of Environmental Inspection Lenik Petrosyan confirmed that the breakdown occurred at 5-6 a.m., on 20 August, and tails poured into the river in the course of 12-50 minutes. The tail pipe has already been repaired, nevertheless, the river hasn’t yet changed its colour, as because of summer water in the river is shallow and self-cleaning process is slow. However, as of 13 p.m., the concentrate was still flowing in the river.”
Kapan-based NGOs express extreme concern, as never has Zangezour combine carried out any measure on cleaning Voghji River after the breakdown. After each breakdown and river pollution many Kapan residents feel worse and they start suffering from headaches,” the Aravot writes.
