From Kapan: Rehabilitation of Tailing Pipe Requires Huge Financial Resources

Our Kapan-based sources keep on expressing their concern with probable opencast development Shahumyan gold-polymetallic mine. The opencast development is a business project which can rise the value of Deno Gold Mining Company shared, which has assets of this mine at the expense of boosting gold reserves: during opencast development reserve assessment increases several times. Chairman of “Khoustup” NGO Vladik Martirosyan said, “If we speak about opencast development of Shahumyan mine, it is located directly in the territory of Kapan, and if the government allows, the whole dust will accumulate on the territory of Kapan...” Vladik Martirosyan also touches upon the issue of Geghanush tailing dumps, where the industrial wastes of Kapan Ore Processing Combine are dumped. The problem is that if extraction volume increases drastically, release limit of the tailing dump can be insufficient. “The most important thing is the reclamation of the tailing dump after its closedown. It means to cover the tailing dump with earth layer so as dust doesn’t blow off to the town. Lands are already polluted their and their rehabilitation and neutralization require huge financial resources. This should be done by the mining company to conserve people’s health,” said the chairman of “Khoustup” NGO.
