“Healthy Hrazdan” initiative group has applied to the PM with a proposal to stop the destructive process on development of metallic mines. The statement particularly says, “It’s known that mining industry in Armenia experiences rapid development. At least ten entrepreneurs have been issued licenses for the development (and prospecting) of metallic mines only in the region of Hrazdan. The basin of Marmarik river may be destructed and turned into a dead zone, if Hrazdan iron mine and Tezhsar nepheline- syenite mine, Hanqavan molybdenum mine, as well as 8 gold mines are developed.”
“We propose to stop the development of metallic mines and to work out a concept, which would enable to thoroughly coordinating all processes in this sphere and to use rationally all the existing resources not relying on the doubtful effect of economic achievement estimated from 10-15 years,” the statement says.
The initiative has applied to the PM on 20 September, and on the same time the government rejected the proposal on increase in mining taxes presented by MP Hrant Bagratyan (from Armenian National Congress, Ex PM). The motivation for rejection was negative impact on investors in case taxes are increased. With its reply the government proved, that well-being of investors is much more important for them than main resources without which it’s impossible to live – water, forest and land.
