Shorzha Village, Gegharkounik Region, sees the solution to the problem with working places in the development of Shorzha magnesium-silicate ore and chromite mine. Maybe the people in the village don’t know that Nature Protection Ministry of Armenia has issued a negative opinion to this project.
Shorzha Village head Suliko Shushanyan told EcoLur that “Gegamet Plus”, the company which wants to develop the mine, has promised to open 300 working places and to make an investment of 25 million USD. In this regard, very urgent social problems will be solved for our and adjacent communities so as to prevent emigration and finally to solve the problem of breadwinning,” said the village head.
Though the mine development will cause large damage both to the village population and to Lake Sevan, an Armenian priority and strategic water reserve, it’s all the same the people support mine opening to solve the problem of earning money. Watch more details in the video.
Reminder: EcoLur opposed to Shorzha mine development. After the specialized public hearings held in Shorzha Village on 22 February 2013 EcoLur sent the minutes on the public hearings to Nature Protection Ministry, as well as its opinion, which says that Shorzha magnesium-silicate ore and chromite mine development project doesn’t reflect the factual risks for Lake Sevan. The project practically misses any environmental impact assessment.
