In recent month Fioletovo gold mining project in Lori Region, Armenia, to be developed opencast by “Grade RedMet” LLC has got wide resonance.
The first reaction was from Fioletovo community, where the community member beat an alarm signal to claim that mining will have irreversible adversary effects on their community first impacting on the local springs and pastures thus depriving the villagers of any chance to earn their living.
Already two ambassadors have been involved in the project – Ivan Volinkin, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russian Federation to Armenia and Andrey Sorokin – the Head of the OSCE Office in Yerevan. The villagers have applied to the Ambassadors asking to support them and not to allow mine development. Letters have been addressed to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Premiere Hovik Abrahamyan.
The representatives of a number NGOs have already received phone calls with aggressive speakers, who try to prevent the public campaign directed against this project.
