Any systematic monitoring of the concentration of radioactive isotopes in the drinking springs, air, soil, open-air basins and local food hasn’t been carried out in Armenia. It’s unclear to what extent our soil, water and food is radiated. On 18 December the Armenian Government approved “Strategy for Monitoring of Environmental Radiation in the Republic of Armenia”, which aims to lay down the steps, which are to be implemented to ensure the establishment and development of the capacities to control and monitor environmental radiation in compliance to the up-to-date international approaches.

The document shows that Armenia has been experiencing this problem since the Soviet period. Currently Armenia doesn’t have any national program on the monitoring of environmental monitoring, there is need for equipment and staff, as well as thorough database.

The strategy on the environmental radiation monitoring and control plans to implement 11 measures, which will result in the increase in the safety of the environmental radiation in the Republic of Armenia.
