The processed radioactive fuel of ANPP is kept in safe conditions, assures Suren Bznuni, Leading Specialist of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center.
He presented the report dedicated to the accountability and control over radioactive materials in Armenia at the international conference “Global Safety and Competent Management of Science” held on 23 October in Yerevan.
In its interview with conference participants – Suren Bznuni and Vahram Petrosyan, General Director of “Armatom” Institute, EcoLur touched upon the problem of storing processed radioactive fuel of ANPP. As it’s known, the processed fuel should be exported to Russia, nevertheless, it’s necessary to ensure its export by the railway, but as we know, the road is closed due to the blockade, while the processed radioactive fuel remains in Armenia.
Suren Bznuni: Nuclear energy is heritage for all us. Our task is to ensure safety and we perform this task. The storehouse meets all the international standards of safety.
EcoLur: And what will happen when the storehouse is full?
Suren Bznuni: the final solution to this issue is still not available, the most important thing is the issue of storing processed nuclear fuel is solved.
EcoLur: We don’t export processed fuel in Russia, as railway communications are closed. What to do, to process on the spot?
Suren Bznuni: Armenia won’t have technologies on the processing of nuclear fuel, and in general, there are a limited number of countries possessing such technologies in the world.
EcoLur: We have radioactive materials accumulated, we will construct another contemporary storehouse, then the third one… Aren’t there any scientific solutions to this problem?
Bznuni: Science has solutions, the matter is how to use these solutions. For example, wastes are buried in the rocks in Sweden. Eventually, decisions are taken by all us, i.e. the society. We have a problem with energy safety. The ANPP ensures 40% of all generated electro energy. If we don’t have the ANPP, what shall we do, to burn the coal?
