Currently there is no investor for the construction of new power unit for the ANPP, said Deputy Minister for Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources Hayk Harutyunyan in reply to EcoLur’s question at the press conference.

Referring to the extension of power station lifetime extension, Hayk Harutyunyan said, “In the field of nuclear energy second power unit lifetime extension program is implemented in line with the schedule and we don’t have any non-anticipated problems here. The nuclear power plant will be stopped for regular rehabilitation in May, June and the first half of July. We will have another planned rehabilitation next year and in this way we will accomplish lifetime extension works of the nuclear power unit.”

The launch of new power unit development of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is planned for 2018, while putting into service is planned for 2026. In the same year the second operating power unit will be taken out of service. The term of this power unit expired in 2016.

Nevertheless, the government decided to extend the operation lifetime of the second power unit for another 10 years taking into consideration the serious lack of basic capacities. For this purpose, Russia has granted a loan of US $ 270 million and a grant of 30 US$ million to Armenia.
