The reduction of the water resources in Ararat Valley caused problems for Metsamor nuclear power plant, as the reactor of the nuclear power plant is cooled with the water taken from Sevjur-Aknalitch springs. But the water in the springs has reduced.
'If the water use in Ararat Valley continues at the same rate, the amount of water in Sevjur-Aknalitch springs will continue reducing up to its cessation, which is a great hazard for the nuclear power plant,” said Ashot Sargsyan Ashot Sargsyan, hydrogeologist of “Hayjrnakhagits Insitute” and “Mel-Hov” company consortium said on 18 March when presenting the findings of the Study of Groundwater Resources in the Ararat Valley in the frames of the USAID Clean Energy and Water Program (CEWP).
Under the hydrogeologist, the nuclear power plant needs 1 cubic meter of water per second for cooling. 'Under the information we have, currently the water provided to the nuclear power plant makes up only 0.5 cubic meter per second. If it continues like this, later the nuclear power plant will experience serious problems in the viewpoint of cooling,' Ashot Sargsyan beated an alarm signal and added if a new nuclear power unit is constructed, the demand for water will be doubled.
