Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in Lovers Park

In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Two years earlier, on 22 March 1985, the Vienne Convention on the Preservation of Ozone Layer was adopted.

Armenia joined the Vienne Convention and the Montreal Protocol on 28 April 1999. In 2006 Armenia adopted a law on “Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer”. In compliance with this law, the production, import, export and transit of substances depleting ozone layer is limited.

The preservation of the ozone layer is connected with the detection of “ozone holes” over the Antarctic, where in the 80’s the scientists recorded drastic decrease in the concentration of stratospheric ozone.

The main ozone-depleting substances are chlorofluorocarbons, which have already been put out of production and hydrochlorofluorocarbons, which are in the process of putting them out of circulation. These substances are used in in refrigerators, airconditioners, fire extinguishers, in dry cleaning, as solvents for cleaning, electronic equipment and as agricultural fumigants.

Depletion of ozone layer promotes increase in the penetration of UV radiation and its adversary impact on human organisms.

Nature Protection Ministry traditionally carried out measures on this day. This year the event will be held at Park of Lovers, beginning at 20:30.
