Most probably additional water will be taken from Lake Sevan in 2013 more than the set limit of 170 million cubic meters. Website Aysor.am displays a material, which says Head of Department of Irrigation and Collector-drainage Systems, State Committee of Water Industry, Karen Daghbashyan said that the water reservoirs are half full this year. He also stated the reason: due to absence of rains the snow in the top of mounts didn’t reach the water reservoirs. At the same time, the Head of International Scientific-Research Centre on Water, Climatic and Recreational Resources Trahel Vardanian noted this year is considered to be a full-water year and that “water reservoirs should be filled completely.”
The material by Aysor.am causes concerns as it’ evident that the State Committee of Water industry is again willing to make a proposal for additional water outlet from Lake Sevan for the irrigation of Ararat Valley, as it was in 2012. Reminder: despite the opinion provided by the Scientific-expert Committee on Lake Sevan Preservation of NAS RA, despite the protests of the environmental public, in 2012 320 million square meters of water were taken out of Lake Sevan. For this purpose, amendments were made in RA Law “On Approving Annual Complex Program on the Recovery, Conservation, Recovery and Use of Lake Sevan Ecosystem”, which limits water outlets in the amount of 170 million square meters, which were approved by the majority of MPs at the National Assembly.
