Canal Murderer

EcoLur Presenting "Canal Murderer" Video.

While tense debates on additional water outlets from Lake Sevan continue between public and state bodies in the information field, water flowing through Sevan-Hrazdan canal has already exceeded the limit set by the law. On 19 July the government approved additional volume of water outlets, 35 million cubic meters, out of additional 150 million. The first tranche gifted to the business by the government and three parliamentary parties should be used from 21 July to 4 August.

But what are these 35 millions? First of all, these are water losses in Sevan-Hrazdan canal and irrigation system, water reservoirs, which drastically need reconstruction due to their technical state. By present moment, the limit of 170 million cubic meters is almost used, exhausted in rainy season.

Expectation that Sevan will be pitied and water outlets will be sparing is not lived up to.

The business which supervises water distribution, doesn’t notice simple needs of ordinary people. Sevan-Hrazdan canal should meet energetic and irrigation needs, at the same time, the state of the canal raises concerns. Geghamavan canal is located on both shores of the canal. The villagers don’t dare to use two out of three bridges. Cases, when people fell into the canal and couldn’t survive are numerous. People assert that about 60 people met their death in the water of canal, which depth is from 7 to 10 meters. For some people, daily descent into the canal for water is a usual route in order to put into service the irrigation system. They tie themselves with ropes for security. Those who manage the canal should think about safe fencing and firm bridges. The public tries to evoke a response, but to no avail so far.
