RA Nature Protection Ministry is opposing to taking additional 1 billion water out of Lake Sevan, as RA Nature Protection Minister Artsvik Minasyan said at the press conference. 'Our position is negative at his moment, as we do think there aren't any substantiated arguments, which may allow additionally letting out one billion cum water out of Lake Sevan. Both at regional level and in Armenia this water resource is considered to be a strategic 'commodity'. Even if we look at the alternative value of this water resource, we can see that it's more than the energetic outcome received with the energetic system or the economic value of agricultural products formed as a result of irrigation systems. One the other hand, the ecological consequences of 1 billion cum water shall be studied on the spot in details, which assumes most serious expert assessments. Given all this staff, we have issued a negative opinion,' Artsvik Minasyan said.
In reply to EcoLur's question whether it's possible for the Ministry to give in, the Nature Protection Minister said, 'No, unless there is another larger substantiation, which will relate to the improvement of the environmental state, and at this moment we are not ready for any giving in.'
