Scientist: Algae in Lake Sevan Are Toxic and Can Impact All Food Chains

The unprecedented algae blooming in Lake Sevan and their further decomposition will have an extremely unfavorable impact on the lake. Lusine Ghambaryan, Associate Professor at Chair of Ecology and Nature Protection of YSU, is beating an alarm signal that the algae in Lake Sevan are toxic and can impact all food chains.

Scientific Assessment of Lake Sevan Water Condition

Lusine Ghambaryan, Head of Hydroecology Department of Institute of Hydroecology and Ichthyology of Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA,  Associate Professor at Chair of Ecology and Nature Protection of YSU, says: 'On 30-31 July, we had a large scientific field tip in Lake Sevan and recorded there are phenomena of algae decomposition on individual shores of the lake. This process has an unpleasant smell. This year the whole aquatic aquatorium of Lake Sevan has bloomed: both big Sevan and small Sevan. This is definitely the indicator of waterlogging, pollution and eutrophication... We have recorded that the water temperature on the surface makes up 20-22 degrees above zero, which is a rather high indicator. The pH made up 8.5. If last June the transparency made up around 8 meters, on average, this year we recorded 1.8-2-2.5 meters...The green algae, cyanobacteria, produce huge amounts of organic substances, which are returned to water systems, and naturally, certain hypoxia will be observed. It will impact all circles. Blooming is extremely unfavorable for freshwater... Frequently, cyanobacterial taxa are also toxic and produce toxins into the aquatic environment, which impact all food chains. If the temperature background maintains, I think we can record another algal blooming in the autumn in the lake. The scientists extremely oppose any additional water intake from Lake Sevan.

...There is always a question left open: the local population living on Lake Sevan shores, towns and village, in my opinion, don't have a clear idea that the preservation of this ecosystem and certain approaches primarily refer to them, as the elimination of bioresources in the lake will cause certain problem, water blooming, which can't be used for recreation purposes. They should realize that all this will have a primary effect on the situation and their health.'
