Taronik Community in Armavir Region has no water: the villagers are beating an alarm signal that they have been deprived of their drinking water because of overexploitation of groundwater basin in Ararat Valley by fish farms. 'We used to have around 30 fish farms, but now there is none, as there is no water,' Taronik residents told EcoLur in their interview. They said they are using artesian water coming out of deep wells as drinking water, which is not chlorinated. 'When we have a bath with this water, our hair gets more rigid, but we drink this water. We don't have any way out, but it's sure one day we will have serious health problems,' Taronik residents said.
According to the report submitted by Advanced Science and Partnerships for Integrated Resource Development Project (ASPIRED) implemented with the USAID support in 2016, water yield of more than 300 artesian wells have decreased by up to approximately 10 times (from 6,118.6 liters per second to 606.4 liters/second). Furthermore, more than 205 wells have lost self-emission capacity due to reduced ground water pressure.
