The concerns expressed by environmentalists that gas and electricity price increase would cause a big hit to the Armenian forests are already visible in the official statements. As Nature Protection Ministry Information and Public Relation Department informs in Tavush Region 10 decisions on administrative fines in the total amount of 1,000,000 AMD were drawn up for illegal transportation of the timber. This indicator was fixed during a week from 22.07 to 28.07. The new price for the electricity entered into force from 7 July, meanwhile the price for one cubic meter of gas went up by 24 AMD (previous price – 132 AMD, current price – 156 AMD), and the price for 1 kW/h went up by 8 AMD (previous price – 30 AMD, current price – 38 AMD). Armenia is losing its forests and the range of illegal forest felling is 10-20 times more than that of the legal felling. Proper control is missing, reforestation works are underfinanced and the government allots funds from the budget for “ArmForest” SNCO by 20% less than required.
