June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day. On the eve of this holiday “EcoLur” Press Club held a press conference where Karine Danielyan, Chairman of “For Sustainable Human Development” and “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” NGO Head Lilik Simonyan presented the main risks for health and environment.
“Desertification risks in Armenia are increasing. There are alarm signals that the springs in Ararat Valley are already getting dried and, as a matter of fact, the agriculture is undermined,” Karine Danielyan said. She also mentioned that ecosystems are also undermined because of mining and SHHPs. “They take if not all the water, then at least 90% into pipes.
The ecosystem is getting dry and the population is getting deprived of its irrigation water and, consequently, we lose biodiversity in the river. If we have several SHHPs on one river, we can consider this river to be dead,” Karine Danielyan said. She also addressed the problems in Yerevan. “The urban development in Yerevan is targeted to destroy the ecology in Yerevan and the historical and cultural heritage in Yerevan,” Karine Danielyan said
