“Pan-Armenian Environmental Front” civic initiative is demanding to stop the construction of Khachaghbyur-2 SHHP implemented by “MegEnergy” Company. “Green Unit” Initiative visited the construction spot on 28 May. The statement says that several days after their visit an accident took place at SHHP and a worked died because of the collapse of a rock weighing 30 tons. “Ruben Yadoyan, Head of “Engineer - Geologist” Company, PhD in Geological Sciences thinks that the SHHP territory is characteristic with high landslip risks: “ We have studied the whole basin and think it has all the prerequisites needed for landslip formation: inclines of slopes, fissure zones, precipitation etc. Under such conditions the construction can be carried out only after in-detailed examination and explorations. Geologist Volodya Simonyan thinks that the construction of any SHHP in this gorge should be banned. “Rocks may collapse, as their integrity is disturbed…Nature Protection Ministry issued a positive opinion of the environmental expertise to the project for 2012, which later was recognized as invalid. In December 2012 public hearings on the new project were held and Environmental Expertise Henrik Grigoryan said that the hearings went badly, as 99% of Getahovit villagers opposed to this project and 1077 Getahovit villagers signed under a protest letter addressed to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. Nevertheless, the Village Head assumed the right to speak on behalf of the villagers and gave a written consent to project implementation, which served as a ground for environmental expertise… A report on crime was handed to the police, Public Prosecutor and Chief Criminal Investigation Department based on numerous violations committed. But the competent bodies closed their eyes…How many victims will be needed to stop this lethal and destroying process…We demand to bring competent officials having issued positive opinion of the environmental expertise to justice, as well as “MegaEnergy” Company and “Era” LLC, the project developer,” the statement of Pan-Armenian Environmental Front says.
