“The hardest environmental problem in Vayots Dzor Region is SHPs. They affect on the landscapes and change the relief,” said Yeghegnadzor Aarhus Center Coordinator Narek Beglaryan in his conversation with EcoLur, “This is already an environmental disaster.” At present there are 13-15 SHPS operating in Vayots Dzor Region. But the government gave permit for the construction of 50 SHPs. Already 12 licenses have been provided for the construction of SHPs on the Yeghegis River only. If to look through the data of ecomonitoring center, it’s obvious that the water in the river has changed its quality, temperature has increased and the fish has disappeared. The landscape of the Yeghegis gorge has also changed: unemployment rate is high in the villages, as elsewhere in Armenia, naturally even 1 or 5 working places have great significance for the village. Ad very frequently for this reason villagers say “yes” to such projects and sometimes they fight against them, for example, as it is in Shatin Village.

Deputy Governor of Vayots Dzor Region Mels Harutyunyan, “SHPs are a big problem for the region. Both as an administration representative and a citizen I think everything should be in some extents. Barbaric attitude is harmful both for nature and people. Today, unfortunately, we have to admit that nature is used barbarically…Maybe it’s lack of our culture and may happen not only in Vayots Dzor Region…”
