Emigration from Armenian village stopped once Teghut Mine opened – village prefect (PHOTOS)

Out of 3,297 residents of Shnogh village, in Armenia’s Lori Region, 370 villagers are working at the Teghut Mine, village’s prefect Haykaz Kochinyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.   

In his words, there is also considerable progress with respect to large cattle; and pig farming is beginning to develop. As per Kochinyan, there is no emigration from the village in the past three years. “What is more, we have immigration. People returned from Russia when they began operating Teghut,” he added.    

But the only serious problem in the village is drinking water. Because of its geographical location, a very small part of the villagers receives water, but once every two days and for a few hours. There are challenges in connection with selling the produce, too, because Shnogh village is 75-kilometers away from Vanadzor city, the regional center.    

And in response to our query as to the Government’s interest in the village, the prefect said this interest has grown over the recent years, since the Government has taken considerable steps toward boosting agriculture and connecting the villager to the land.
