Odzun and Gargar villages, Lori Region, Partizak Village, Aragatsotn Region, Achajur Village, Tavush Region, and Vardenik Village, Gegharkounik Region, have burials of expired pesticides. Currently they are being examined for detecting toxic substances in them. The examinations are carried out by “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” NGO.
“These burials date back to the Soviet period plus the new ones. Now nobody knows what is happening there, why people live nearby, there are agricultural territories and products,” said Qnarik Grigoryan, the doctor-expert at NGO.
The NGO is concerned with the absence of safety measures for people and environment, “Pesticides may cause incurable damage to health penetrating into the organism with water and agrofood. They harm kidney, respiration and nerve system,” Qnarik Grigoryan said.
This issue was raised at the meeting with the communities, where the NG carried out examinations of the accumulated pesticides.
Sampling was taken from the burials and agricultural land areas, and the results will be published. The examinations are carried out in the frames of the project entitled “Protecting environment and improving the health of farmers living in neighborhood with POP (Persistent organic pollutant) hot spots.”
