The project on the construction of a new landfill site in Nubarashen entered the state of environmental impact expert assessment. The public hearings of 'Construction of a new landfill site and closedown of operating landfill site in Nubarashen' was held on 26 March in Erebuni Municipality in Yerevan. The new landfill site will be located immediately next to the operating landfill site and will occupy an area of 29 ha, out of which 20.55 ha is forest area. The trees in the area of 2.7 ha will be cut down for the construction of a new landfill site. The new landfill site will annually accept 300,000 tons of wastes. The landfill site will be divided into 5 zones with different capacities and damping periods. It will operate for 28 years. There is no garbage recycling planned.
The project contractor company expert Vram Tevosyan says only the garbage will be transferred to the new landfill site in Nubarashen, which is not subject to recycling. After studies and inventory, the international consultant made a conclusion that the garbage reaching the landfill site practically contains little garbage subject to recycling. The consultants reached a joint conclusion it is more expedient to establish a collection system, which will sort the garbage in the first stage and, as a matter of fact, only that part of the garbage will reach the landfill site, which is not subject to sorting or it is not economically beneficial to sort it. That is, already sorted garbage will enter the landfill site,' Vram Tevosyan said.
In reply to EcoLur's question where the remaining garbage goes, the expert said, 'The remaining garbage will go to existing recycling companies, for example, a paper recycling company.'
Under the project of the construction of a new landfill site, it is planned to construct a drainage system and to manage water flows. Under the project, the filtrate collected from the existing and new landfill sites will be collected in a designated reservoir in the new landfill site through the drainage system, though the project doesn't say how this water will be purified later.
The landfill site will have a gas collection system. The total value of Yerevan solid waste management project is 26 million Euros.
