'We don't have a water problem, we have a problem with water resource management,' Kotayq Regional Head Romanos Petrosyan said at his meeting with Garni Village activists and EcoLur team.
The regional head received the group of activists upon the request of Garni resident Arusyak Ayvazyan, initiator of 'S.O.S Garni' civil movement. The activists the presented the risks of Qaghtsrashen gravity irrigation system project implemented with the loaning funds of US $10 million of World Bank. During the meeting, the legislative violations committed at the launch of the project were presented in details during the meeting. The activists said that the negative opinion of most residents of Garni community was neglected in this project. 'We were told that there will be amendments made in the project, but these amendments referred to a minor part of Garni. Currently, the majority of the community doesn't have any water,' Arusyak Ayvazyan said.
EcoLur Informational NGO President Inga Zarafyan expressed an opinion that the project implementation is near to being an environmental crime, which is accompanied with numerous violations of green rights.
An agreement was reached that the documents approving Qaghtsrashen project risks will be submitted to the regional administration. Romanos Petrosyan announced that he intends to introduce essential reforms in the management of water resources in Kotayq Region.
