The Turkish project of constructing a cascade of reservoirs named Beshik-Aya faced the confrontation of the Georgian greens. On January 16 the Greens Part of Georgia disseminated a press release, which particularly says: under this project, the Kura River should be blocked in the territory of Turkey (Ardaghan Province) where the cascade of reservoirs will be constructed. If the project is implemented for a distance of 5 kilometers, the Kura riverbed in the territory of Georgia won’t have any water at all, and this territory will turn into an arid valley. In summer the situation will become more strained, when the river will lose the opportunity for self-purification because of flows of natural water and will turn into a collector for sewage. What about Azerbaijan, the main sources of water supply to Minchegaur reservoirs are Kura, Alazani and Lori Rivers. If the Turkish project is implemented, the water reservoir will lose 10% of its water which will cause huge damage to the agriculture and energy of Azerbaijan.
The statement of the Greens of Georgia says that after the press conference given by Secretary General of the Greens Party Georgi Gachechiladze President Sahakashvili made a statement that “Turkey won’t touch Kura, instead the Turkish party will construct a cascade of hydropower plants in Georgia … for itself.”
“This is not the best outcome for Georgia, maybe it’s the worst, as occasionally large reservoirs cause higher damage to nature than lack of water, so it doesn’t matter how much you try damage to our nature is ensured,” stated the Greens Party of Georgia.
