The Armenian Government intends to increase the productivity of fish farms by three times!!! This is what the government program fro 2012-2017 says. This intention wont’ cause such wonder, if it didn’t coincide with another governmental decision to apply to National Assembly of Armenia with a proposal to amend the law and to increase water outlets from Lake Sevan by 150 million cubic meters, besides limited 170 million.
The public version that officials want to get water for fish farms at the expense of Sevan and not for peasants find its confirmation. As it’s known, the fish farms of Ararat Valley used free-of-charge water from artesian sources so long unless the government decided to place water meters. Now the artesian water, as well as sevan water left unused will go to the Araks River. Farmers will continue asking the authorities to solve the hardest problem for them and not to pay for water before they harvest. While the level in Sevan will keep on decreasing, as fish export is very profitable business, and as we can see this issue is solved at the highest level.
