ArmInfo
Governor of the Syunik Region, Armenia, Surik Khachatryan is going to build two hydro-power plants (HPPs) in the area of the village of Tsav nor far from the town of Kapan. According to the sources of 168 Zham newspaper, the River of Basuta runs along the village and there is already an operating HPP on it.
The local residents could not name the owner of the plant. However, they threaten with protests if construction of the new HPPs is launched. They say that the construction will cause irrecoverable damage to the sensitive environment around the village.
Building HPPs in Armenia has become "fashionable" among some Armenian oligarchs since HPPs generate relatively cheap electric power. All this has resulted in quite justified public protests waves. The most active protest wave was around Trchkan Waterfall. Activists spent several frosty nights in tents near the unique waterfall and saved it from being turned into an HPP.
Activists of Trchkan Civil Initiative shared their concern with the president of Armenia in a letter alarming that destruction of nature, careless exploitation of natural resources and irrational development of economy in Armenia have reached menacing proportions.
EcoLur: Syunik Region Governor has denied the information concerning hydro-power plants building.
