The employees of Alaverdi copep smelter have marched out again in the morning of July and blocked Yerevan-Tbilisi railway. The term of the extended employment contracts of the plant workers expired on 30 June. Alaverdi residents having remained unemployed are demanding to resume the operation of the copper smelter.
According to the ankyun3news.com, the director of “ACP” Company Lusine Mejlumyan had a meeting with the protesters. She said the company can’t afford continue paying salaries under the conditions of standing idle and has to make 200 employees redundant. She noted that the copper smelter can’t work within the ranges of permissible emissions. Alaverdi Community Head has informed Lori Regional Head Andrey Ghukasyan about the situation, as the armtimes.com informs the regional head had a meeting with the workers. He said he is going to visit Alaverdi Copper Smelter and Teghout mine on 8 July to speak to the employees, to present the position of the government and the real vision of the further destiny of the plant. The regional head assured that the plant administration will also attend this meeting, asked the employees to stop the blocking and wait for the upcoming meeting. Currently, the railroad is open.
