“I’ve got problems with my throat, I’m a sportsman…but now I’m suffocating, while my throat’s burning…” EcoLur received these complaints from people living or working near “Pure Iron” factory (Artsakh 75, Yerevan, Armenian Republic) and “Armenian Titanium Production” LLC (Arinberd 3/21, Yerevan, Armenian Republic).
“Pure Iron” factory produces ferromolybdenum, pure iron molybdenum, while rhenium is extracted from gases. “Armenian Titanium Production” LLC produces ferrotitanium and other ferrobars. Production results in emission of sulfuric anhydride and nitrogen oxides into atmosphere.
As the State Environmental Impact Assessment Center doesn’t exercise any control over these polluted territories in Yerevan, we have to get satisfied with the data submitted by companies themselves.
Thus in 2009, according to “Pure Iron” PLC, the amount of sulfuric anhydride emission made up 301,1 tons per year, while annual standard is 349 tons. “Armenian Titanium Production” LLC produces 0,48 tons of nitrogen oxides per year with annual standard of 0,519 tons.
EcoLur draws the attention of Nature Protection Ministry and Health Ministry of Armenia to this issue and demands to carry out monitoring of emissions to prevent risks for human health and environment and to publicize an official opinion on this issue.
