"Amulsar Mining endangers environmental safety in Armenia and it must be stopped”: a group of environmentalists addressed such a demand with a protest demonstration held in front of the building of the Armenian Government and “Lydian Armenia” CJSC.
The participants had posters saying “Life or Mine”, “Water or Cyanide”, “You Develop, We Die”, “Go To Cyanide Hell”.
The protest demonstration set off in the front of the governmental building. Member of Pan-Armenian Environmental Front Levon Galstyan listed the hazards endangering the water resources in Armenia because of Amulsar mining, which are particularly related with the contamination of Kechut and Spandaryan reservoirs, Arpa and Vorotan Rivers and Lake Sevan with heavy metals and hazardous substances.
Environmentalist Apres Zohrabyan spoke about the hazards threatening tourism development in Jermuk resort town because of the project outlining that tourism business is more beneficial for Armenia than mining business. “This project will turn Jermuk from resort to miners’ town,” Apres Zohrabyan stated.
“Mining in such small countries as Armenia is a crime, which pollutes not only environment, but also healthy living,” Garni activist Arusyak Ayvazyan mentioned.
None of the government representatives got out of the building to listen to the demands and complaints of the protest demonstration. From the governmental building the environmentalists moved to the office of “Lydian Armenia” CJSC.
