On 29 May the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan took part in the opening ceremony of “EcoFarm” LLC in Gndevaz Village. This livestock complex is designed for cattle breeding and production of raw milk and cheese. The complex is mainly oriented towards milk production. For this purpose it raises pedigree beef and milk calves imported from Germany. The company plans to produce up to 1.16 million kg milk from around 300 head of pedigree cattle. The newly-opened complex is designed in accordance with international food security requirements. It should be mentioned that not very far from “EcoFarm” LLC Lydian International Company represented by its subsidiary – “Geoteam” CJSC will construct a heap leach facility with 106 million tons of capacity in the frames of Amulsar project in the 134 ha of apricot orchards and agricultural land areas of 280 households in the community. The facility will extract the ore mined in Amulsar gold mine, which needs 2,000 tons of sodium cyanide per year. Such concentration of cyanide jeopardizes all human organisms. The EIA of Amulsar project doesn’t mention anything about possible leaks in case of human factors, natural and man-made disasters. The sanitary zone of the facility is located in a distance of 1 km from Gndevaz. Amulsar mine, which will be developed in opencast matter, is located in a distance of 5 km from Gndevaz. The mine dust, which will contain heavy metals and toxic substance, can spread with a diameter of 30 km, which means that the mine dust will contaminate everything in a diameter of 30 km, including Jermuk resort town located in a distance of 10 km and Gndevaz village located in a distance of 5 km. Specialists have voiced many times Amulsar project risks for people and environment, nevertheless, they haven’t been taken into consideration. Moreover, there is tendency in Armenia to develop mining and agriculture next to each other.
