Yerevan Municipality Discussing Issues of Waste Management

The issues of Yerevan's waste management sector and the experience of Yerevan and the Ile-de-France region of France were discussed during "Prevention and reduction of waste generation in Yerevan" conference.

French Ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies  noted that the French government is interested in supporting the sustainable development of Yerevan. "Yerevan is the driving force of Armenia's economy. Our goal is to develop Yerevan, and the French side provides its financial support."

Levon Hovhannisyan, Yerevan Deputy Mayor, said that in 2022, together with the French side, Yerevan's urban change program was launched, the aim of which is to support the municipality in implementing a new strategy in the fields of waste management, transport and urban development.

"We intend to invest our experience and strengthen Yerevan's capabilities in the field of waste management. It is very important to include waste management in the circular economy system," Anne-Louise Mesadieu, Councilor of the Ile-de-France Regional Council, noted.

According to Sasha Katvalyan, Director of "Yerevan Garbage Removal and Sanitary Cleaning", more than 1 million people live in Yerevan and 1,350-1,600 square meters of garbage are generated daily. Technical security is one of the main problems.

Armen Begoyan, Director of Yerevan Municipality "Greening and Environmental Protection" ANC, addressed the issue of waste sorting. "For us, garbage is sorted manually. According to our calculations, an investment of 30 million Euros will be required to build a sorting plant in Yerevan. Yerevan does need such a plant," Armen Begoyan outlined.
