The forests in Armenia should be inventoried, as UNDP Climate Change Project Coordinator Diana Harutyunyan said during the round table “What We Lose and Get in Forest Sector In Terms of Climate Change” held at “EcoLur” Press Club. “The main document needed for proper forest management is forest inventory document, and based on them forest management plans are developed, which need reviewing within 10 years. Forest inventory is carried out with clear methodology and obligatorily needs fields trip, specific technical facilities etc. That is, you can’t take satellite images and consider it to be inventory. When you create a greenhouse gas cadastre, its drawback is that you don’t have any opportunity to assess forest regrowth, classification and type, reserves as a carbon dioxide collector. So far we use the forest inventory figures for 1993. If we want to attract funds for projects in the frames of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, we should possess data,” said Diana Harutunyan in her speech. Diana Harutyunyan called for environmental donor organizations to support the implementation of overall forest inventory in Armenia. For her part, she promised to substantiate allocation of certain funds in the next project on preparing national communication on climate change to have their contribution in forest inventory.
The participants of the round table were as follows: Ruben Petrosyan, Deputy Director, Chief Forester of “Hayantar” (ArmForest) SNCO at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia, Aram Gyulkhasyan, Director of “State Forest Monitoring Center” SNCO at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia, Armen Ghurshudyan, Deputy director of “State Forest Monitoring Center” SNCO at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia, Aram Aghasyan, Head of Specially Protected Areas and Arboretums Management Division of Nature Protection Ministry of the RA, Aram Gabrielyan, National Coordinator of UN Focal Point Convention on Climate Change, Andranik Ghulijanyan Director of “Zikatar” State Preserve, Working Group Manager of UNDP «Sustainable Land and Forest Management in Northeastern Armenia” Program, Diana Harutyunyan, Coordinator of Climate Change Project of UNDP, Armen Gevorgyan National Coordinator of Armenian Branch of the Transboundary Joint Secretariat for the South Caucasus, Artur Alaverdyan Forest Programs Coordinator of WWF-Armenia, Nazeli Vardanyan, President of “Armenian Forests” NGO, Hovik Sayadyan, Dr. of Geographic Sciences and Professor, the working team of EcoLur.
