The glacier on Mount Ararat used to be 8 square kilometers 100 years ago, but it has reduced during this 20-25 years and now it’s 5.5 square kilometers,” said Aram Gabrielyan, Climate Change Framework Convention National Focal Point Coordinator at the press conference at EcoLur Press Club on 15 May. This indicator is conditioned with the climate change present in Armenia and increase in temperature. “If the trends till 1998 showed temperature increase by 0.4 degree, then the average temperature increase till 2007 was by 0.85 degree, while the trends till 2011 show that average temperature increase in the republic is by 1.03 degree. In the frames of Climate Change Convention it has always been discussed where the dangerous threshold is found after which there will be irreversible changes for the climatic system of the earth. Today this time the hazardous threshold has been decided to be 2 degrees, and at present the global temperature average increase had made up 0.7 degree,” said Diana Harutyunyan, Climate Change Coordinator in Armenia.
Under the speakers, the temperature in Armenia should have increased by 1.3 degree by 2030, nevertheless we had this indicator recorded already in 2011.
