“For Environmental Safety and Developing Democracy” NGO has sent Nature Protection Ministry 10 question in regard with the operation of Deno Gold Mining Company in Kapan.
1. In the course of geological prospecting by Deno Gold Mining Company a huge area of forest-covered territory was destroyed in Shahumyan area, Kapan Town. Whether the competent bodies have estimated the damage caused and whether this damage has been recovered?
2. In the course of geological prospecting by Deno Gold Mining Company a huge number of illegal roads and hundreds of areas have been constructed in Shahumyan area, Kapan Town. Whether these constructions had their project and underwent the procedure of environmental expertise, as the Armenian environmental legislation requires?
3. Whether stockholding of the fertile layer of the earth was carried out during the construction of roads and areas and whether the lands were handed to Kapan Community?
4. How Nature Protection Ministry commented on the studies carried out by the Ecological Center for Noopshere Studies of NAS RA in 2007 for Kapan?
5. Geghanush tailing dump has an environmental passport up to 2002 and hazard classification. What are the grounds for Geghanush tailing dump currently operated by Deno Gold Mining Company not having any passport and hazard class?
6. Whether other wastes of Deno Gold Mining Company have environmental passport and risk classification?
7. Whether Deno Gold Mining Company has the governmental decision on changing Atchanan riverbed in Tejadin section?
8. Whether there are any permits for dump storing in the area of Atchanan River?
9. Whether Deno Gold Mining Company has any license for soil management dated in 2005?
10. Whether Deno Gold Mining Company has any environmental plan?
In its letter the organization mentions that it carries out studies in the frames of “Open Mine and Hidden Finances” program, which aims to increase the transparency of the relations between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Deno Gold Mining Company focusing on the socio-economic policy.
