Joint Project Proposals Filed by EcoLur and RA Nature Protection Ministry Taken into Consideration in SHPP Project

EcoLur

'Amritam' LLC has submitted the project on the EIA of 'Gndevanq-1' SHPP construction on expert assessment. The public hearings of the project will be held on 27 January in Jermuk Municipality. The project particularly says that a water-measuring automated management equipment will be placed at the entrance of the fish pathway (AVFM5.0 - Velocity Flow Monitor). This equipment will enable online supervision of used water amount parameters. Another water-measuring device is planned to be installed in the entrance of the pressure pipeline to regulate the estimated yield of 0.5 cum/s set for 'Gndevanq' SHPP. Both a garbage-collecting net and a small cage net will be installed in the pressure water intake to prevent the entrance of the small fish into the pipeline. These measures have been based on the proposals, which have been developed “Support to SHPP-relating reforms through the dialogue of public and RA Nature Protection Ministry for Sustainable Use of River Ecosystems” project implemented by EcoLur in partnership with RA Nature Protection Ministry with the support of UNDP-GEF in 2014-2016.

According to the project, SHPP fish passway won't be an obstacle for the free movement of the fish. The fish passway plans to let out environmental flow of 1.9 m3/s in mandatory and continuous manner regardless of water-fullness and demand for electricity in the given year. Out of red-listed species we can meet Sevan trout (Capoeta sevangi) in the Arpa river. 'During planned construction works tree felling may be carried out in the areas designed for water intake (a total of 10 bushes and wild tree species located on the river bank)...Greening will be carried on a total area of 760 m2 adjacent to SHPP with 30 tree species inherent to this landscape,' the project particularly says. The economic damage caused to environment as a result of the construction of 'Gndevanq' SHPP will make up 388259 AMD per year. Annual average electricity produced by this SHPP will make up 10.13 million kWh. 'Gndevanq 1' SHPP will be the forth on the Arpa River, where already 'Areni HPP', 'Jermuk HPP-2', 'Arpa' SHPP operate. According to the data provided by the Public Service Regulatory Committee, two more HPPs 'Jermuk 1' and 'Arpa 3' are in the construction stage. As a result of the operation of all these SHPPs around 14% of the Arpa river length will be piped.

The material was developed in the frames of “Supporting new reforms in SHPP sector through CSO-government dialogue” supported by UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme".
