A new National Security Strategy has been published, which will replace the one adopted in 2007. With the new strategy in energy sector, Armenia will strive to establish a self-sufficient and stable energy system. The strategy for the sector says:
"Ensuring Armenia's energy independence and energy security is one of our strategic priorities. Our energy policy is aimed at neutralizing the threats facing the sector, such as dependence on imports of liquid and gas fuels, possible disruptions of transit infrastructure, Armenia will continue to work on diversifying energy supply methods and routes.
As a far-reaching goal, Armenia will make a concerted effort to become a regional power hub by connecting the energy systems of neighboring countries and the common electricity market of the Eurasian Economic Union.
On the way to developing and diversifying the energy system, we will rely on local primary (renewable) energy resources in accordance with all environmental standards, economically efficient and reasonable use, alternative energy acquisition and accumulation technologies, liberalization of the electricity market, as well as energy efficient and energy efficient investments. In the context of energy independence and security, we will pursue the peaceful development of nuclear energy, in particular, the construction of new nuclear power plants in Armenia."
